The Shark vacuum is a great gadget. I have carpets and hard floors in my home and it glides without a problem on both. Collects dust and little scraps without a problem. I like that I can turn it on and my floors are nice and vacuumed. It does it’s own thing, unless I use the remote, but I leave it alone until the battery is low. Once that happens, it searches for its dock station.

If you’re in the market for one of these, the Shark vacuum is a great option. I own a Bobsweep and Noisz as well, and this is great compared to them.

Great Robot vacuum that doesn''t break the bank: A Complete Review

I''m really happy with this Shark Ion Robot R76 vacuum. I''ve wanted a robot vacuum for years and looked into the Roomba brand. They run between $300 for their base model and up to $950 for their top model but they''ve got pretty poor reviews on their lower end models. I love my Shark upright vacuum that has lasted for many years with no issues so I decided to give their robotic vacuum a try. After reading consumer reviews, nearly all of the Shark models got high ratings, even the least expensive models. I''m so glad I went with the Shark and not a Roomba. It works really well and has updated features from the Shark 750 line.

WIFI VOICE AND APP CONTROL: It hooks up to your wifi and can be voice controlled through Alexa or Google Assistant. You don''t even have to move now to get a clean house, just speak. For those who don''t have Alexa (like me) there''s an app and you can control it from your smart phone ! The app is extremely convenient and so far has worked great. You don''t need the app or Alexa to have this, you can turn it on the old fashion way by pushing the buttons. The buttons are straightforward, one to clean, one to spot clean and one to send it back to the docking station.
AUTO-SENSE NAVIGATION: It has Auto- Sense navigation which works on all kinds of surfaces, hard wood, carpet, area rugs, linoleum etc. I was very impressed how the Shark easily glided from my hardwood floors over area rugs and over my thick rubberized chef mats in the kitchen. My regular upright vacuum doesn''t even do that. It always gets stuck on those mats. But the Shark robot glided up onto them with no problem.
GOOD FOR PETS: It has a multi surface brush roll that pics up dander and hair on hardwood or carpet. I like this feature because even though I don''t have a pet I have found the vacuums designed for pet hair work better to remove dust and allergens. I also lose a ridiculous amount of human hair (my husbands says he doesn''t know how I''m not bald with the amount that is always on the floors lol) The brush roll is smaller on this robot vacuum than an upright so I will have to check it regularly to make sure hair isn''t becoming tangled. But it does a great job sucking it up and I''ve had no issues so far.
EDGE AND CORNER BRUSHES: These long brushes stick out on both sides of the robot and sweep debris into the path of it. They are what picks up the crumbs and dirt that is right along the edge of the wall. They do a great job at walls and under my baseboard heaters (again another area even my upright misses) and it comes with 4 extra brush replacements. It also comes with an additional filter and a strip you can cut to block to block off certain rooms or areas you don''t want the Shark to go.

THE GOOD: I love the app and wifi, you can schedule times for cleaning and control it right from your phone. The machine is relatively quiet. It transitions from hardwood to carpet or over high area rugs and mats effortlessly. I was really impressed by this. The machine holds its charge for a long time and moves pretty quickly whiles it''s cleaning. It maneuvers underneath furniture and beds to areas I cannot reach with an upright. The docking station is very small and discrete. The robot has good suction and picks up dirt, crumbs, hair, etc great on my hardwood floors, leaving nothing behind.

THE BAD: The docking sensor is not as effective farther away. If the robot is close to the dock it easily glides and finds it. However if I try docking it while it''s in a room down the hall, it started to spaz out a little trying to find it. It takes a while for it to return so don''t expect it to rush back to dock and charge.
The path of the machine works, eventually. This robot works impeccable if all of your furniture is aligned at 90 degree angles of one another. Then the machine just goes back and forth in perfect lines. But that''s not a realistic set up in most homes, so it does take longer for the robot to go over all of the areas. It doesn''t "remember" where it went it just keeps moving back and forth and when it senses and hits something it changes direction. This is how nearly all robotic vacuums work. Some of the very expensive robot vacuums have a more sophisticated guidance system that actually maps the room but they cost nearly $1000. But this robot does eventually reach all the areas, it just takes longer than perhaps a more expensive model.

This has cut down my cleaning time considerably and works really well. Is this a total substitute for an upright vacuum... No. You will likely still need to do some upright vacuuming from time to time. But this does an awesome job of maintaining clean floors on a regular basis and cuts down on the need to upright vacuum by a lot. It''s low design allows it to go under beds, dressers and furniture I can''t even reach with an upright. The amount of dust and dirt it''s picked up from under furniture is incredible. I have bad allergies to dust and this is going to help me a lot. So far this has been a great purchase. I will update my review if I run into any issues in the future. All in all this is a great robotic vacuum for its price point and for someone looking to try their first robot vacuum like I was. It does everything it should and is keeping my floors regularly clean

4th update: if I could give this zero stars I would. It is the most annoying thing ever. 2, much cheaper, iLife and a no name Apsom have outlived it. 9/10 when I turn this on it has a complaint and has so many complaints I have to look up what each light means (my aposom actually tells me) and then fix it. I could probably vacuum myself in the amount of time I spend troubleshooting. Today it’s 3 short beeps that sound nothing like it’s other beeps, and I’ve never heard, so I don’t even know how to troubleshoot that one. Last month it was out of commission for weeks because it didn’t recognize it was on the charger despite cleaning both. My poor Aposom is overworked because it has to do the whole house itself again today.

3rd update: So, I was uncomfortable giving my credit card number to a possibly foreign country over the telephone to get my warranty replacement. Shark offers no check or pay online option, or really any alternative other than giving your credit card over the phone and they will NOT do a warranty replacement for free. So I went and got a prepaid card and used it to pay the $25 to be able to return my 3 month old, completely dead, robot. I received my replacement and it is JUNK, so either they’re sending out refurbished ones that aren’t being refurbished and tested properly, for warranty replacement, OR their quality is completely inconsistent. My first robot, while it worked, could literally suck up a toy or sock and keep going. It would even drive over the baby gate it was that all terrain. The new robot has given me an error EVERY SINGLE DAY since I got it. Wheel stuck by a single stray popcorn kernel. Brushroll stuck from getting hair on it. Suction clogged by a tiny scrap of paper. This robot isn’t even worth the $25 I paid to have it shipped to me. I am so disappointed in Shark that I gave up my dreams of a Shark Duoclean cordless vacuum and bought a Dyson instead. In comparison, my cheap ilife robot that is older than my Shark got crushed by the recliner last week, I popped the bumper back on and it still works better than my replacement Shark.

Update: It was only good while it lasted, it is barely 3 months old and won’t charge or turn on at all, it’s dead. I don’t expect vacuums that are run daily to last forever but at least a year. Support was not able to get it to work so the only option is to replace it (and you have to return the robot and prepay shipping of $25 over the telephone, before they’ll replace it and the replacement will not have the guarantee).

This is my 3rd robotic vacuum. I got this to specifically replace the one I use on Berber carpet in a formal area that is an open living/dining room. This is important information because speaks of why I needed to replace the other.

Before I got a second one for the carpeted rooms I was trying to move the 1 back and forth between the 2 areas which was a pain. The one I was using between the 2 rooms worked great. Because it didn’t have a brush roll it wasn’t bothered by the Berber and it was 2.99” tall so didn’t fit under the side supports on our dining chairs. As soon as we got the new one we had problems. 1) it skipped on the Berber and 2) it was 2.8” so just got under the side supports, and by just I mean just enough to get itself stuck.

I don’t know about you, but I’m busy. Thats why i want a robotic vacuum. Or in this case 1 for each room. I don’t use the schedule function because I have kids and need to pick up first. However, with the robotic vacuums my morning routine is just starting everything. I get up and start coffee, unload the dishwasher, move laundry and restart the washer and then I do a quick pickup so I can start the robotic vacuums. Then I usually have to leave the house. I don’t want to come home to having to move the vacuum to get the other rooms, which is why I got a second. However, if I come home to the second stuck under a chair instead of having finished vacuuming, that defeats the purpose. I have a robotic vacuum so I can come home to a clean house.

So, insert the Shark Ion. It doesn’t look as streamline as many of the brands out there but it works. And at the 3”ish range it doesn’t fit to get stuck under my chairs. It can still go through the higher clearance of front to back to get under the table but it doesn’t get stuck. The all terrain wheels work well over things that somehow end up in it’s way even though I just picked up. The multi surface brushroll does a lot better on my Berber than a carpet brush does. Because of this it doesn’t skip on my (textured) Berber carpet. The edge brushes work well to get things out from the edge or even from under the front of the sofa. Assembly of these was just popping them on, nice and easy and really the only assembly required.

The Shark doesn’t seem as “smart” as my other robots. It’s movements seem more random and less smooth. Also, my others will hug a wall or sofa edge going in an in and out curving pattern to make sure it gets under any edges and gets whatever the side brush kicks out. The shark doesn’t seem to do that. It gets the job done though and to me that’s what matters. The suction is very good as well. We live in the sandy south and I was surprised by how much sand it was able to get out of the carpet (that was deep enough I didn’t know was there), this is usually a challenge for even full size vacuums.

I will say, that it may not be as smooth looking or moving, it is solid in quality. The clunkier look translates to a sturdier feel. Also it is consistent. My other robots will sometimes have trouble finding their base or landing on it perfectly to charge, I’ll come home to the work done but the vacuum dead. The shark knows exactly what it’s doing. It goes straight to its base and lands perfectly, every time. It even vacuums around its base whereas my others keep about 3’ away unless they’re going home.

The dust cup is large, I can vacuum a few times before I have to empty it (and my kids aren’t neat). The filter does require a screwdriver to replace but since you’ll only replace it every 6 months or so I guess I’ll survive having to track down a screwdriver. The robot does not come with a remote, it has easy to use on board controls or an app. The problem with the app is that it requires wi-fi to sync and it does not allow you to manually enter your words/fi info. Since my wi-fi is hidden I have been unable to connect it to try out the app. Since it has on board controls and I don’t use the schedule feature this has not been a problem for me but if you don’t have home wi-fi and want to use a schedule this is something to consider as a hotspot or bluetooth isn’t going to cut it.

Despite the cons, I’d rather have the reliable and strong clean I get with this Shark. At only $300 this is a solid option from a reliable brand.

UPDATE: I know it has cons but I had to upgrade this to a 5 star because it just took on an i picked up room. My kids had toys all over the room and my 2 year old turned it on. I would never turn it on with small toys because I’m sure it would get stuck. A couple big balls or light larger toys is one thing because it can push them but small toys just get it stuck. Or so I thought. I walk in to it climbing over the small toys, I kid you not, it did not get on top of one and then scream that it’s wheel was stuck it climbed right over them. Then I turn it off to put it back and I go to empty it and the thing has sucked up a small toy without getting clogged. I’m not talking a lego, I’m talking a piece of toy cheese. It isn’t flat cheese, it’s curvey with holes in it (swiss cheese maybe) and it maybe 4” big. It sucked it completely into the dust cup. The suction on this is amazing. Add in the small brush that borders the suction hole opposite the brush roll so it doesn’t shoot anything back out but sucks it all up, it’s just amazing. It has also dragged a cord left on the floor with it (it had sucked up the end). Somehow this brush roll and wheels don’t get clogged, jammed or tangled. All my previous bots would twist a cord up in it’s wheels, sidebrushes or brushroll and then I’d have to unwind it. This is seriously a low maintenance bot.

This robot vacuum was a complete disappointment. It randomly crashed into walls and furniture in the living room and kitchen, but never found its way down the hall and into the bedrooms and bathrooms. It also couldn''t find its way back to the docking station, located in my office near the WIFI source. The suction was good, and it picked up dog hair, but not around the edges of the walls where the dog hair "tumbleweeds" tend to collect.

After returning the Shark, I purchased an Ecovacs Deebot 500 and it is FANTASTIC! I run it first in Edge mode and it goes all through the house, feeling is way along the walls and furniture. That catches most of the tumbleweeds. Once it has made that outer perimeter, I run it on Random mode and it goes through the middle of the rooms. Unlike the Shark, which hits objects at full speed then turns around, the Deebot slows down when it senses it is about to hit an object. It lightly touches the wall or object, adjusts itself, and continues on its way. It also had no trouble locating the docking station. It transitions easily from tile to carpeting. I still can''t believe how much dog hair and other debris is collected daily!!

My wife and I love this little robot vac. We keep a tidy house but don''t always have time to run the vacuum. While this wont pick up everything, it tends to struggle near the edges of the room, the robot vac has been helping us keep our house looking clean for a few weeks now.

One word of caution. Don''t expect this vac to start cleaning as soon as you open the box. I am sure it could, but the directions indicate that you should bring the battery up to full charge before you do. For us this took a few hours - more than enough time to set up an account and download the app for my phone. I also took the opportunity to set a weekly time for the vac to run without us having to be there. We started on the main floor of our house (600 sf +/-) and during the course of an hour it does a pretty good job with the rooms. My wife has even taken to moving it upstairs to clean the hallway and bedrooms. While our house looks pretty clean, the attached image is after just two cleanings. It certainly picked up a lot more than we thought it would.

It does seem to get itself stuck occasionally, but if you just let it keep running it will eventually get itself out. The app is also really easy to use. We highly recommend this vac to anyone in the market for one.

Let me start by saying that I really really wanted to love this robot. I had to convince my husband to let me get it and after weeks of convincing he finally said yes. I was really excited! I set everything up and send it to clean around the house followed all the directions. First it doesn’t vacuum in a logical way it kind of just goes all over the place. Second it gets stuck on the corners of rugs and wall outlets. I ran it more than once to give it a chance to “learn” the house but it got lost even just finding the dock. I had to consistently pick it up and dock it. The suction power was rather weak even when it was on max. It did not pick up some very basic tiny pieces of trash instead it just blew them around. Guess I gotta stock to sweeping. This is going back.

I bought the Shark ION R87 after the Eufy was no longer working properly. I had owned a shark before (the 720 I believe?) Which worked pretty well until the suction power went after 2 years so I switched to the Eufy, which lasted only 6 months before it started making loud sounds. Came back to the shark R87. I am not sure what is it about this one, but when it runs it seems to create an exhaust that blows the cat hair dust (tumbleweeds) around rather than suck them up. It does catch it if it going straight on, but anything to side gets blown out of the way. I had to run it twice a day rather than the others usually every day or 2 was fine. I am currently searching for my next one to try. Hoping to find one that will last this time!

Compared to my previous Shark Model 700, this model appears to have omitted the optical obstacle avoidance system as it needs to bump into things before it reverses. The 700 series would often not need to actually touch an obstacle, especially lighter colored ones before it would stop and change direction.

I contacted Shark about this issue and they sent me a replacement, however it also exhibits the same behavior, leading me to believe that Shark has intentionally deleted the optical system in favor of the simpler and cheaper "bump and go'' only system.

This makes the machine much noisier and prone to push around and knock over items in its path instead of avoiding them.
The bump and go system combined with a somewhat faster traveling also causes quick reversals which leads to the rubber wheels squeaking on hard floors.

The suction is very good and in Max setting it will probably handle fairly deep pile carpet, albeit at the detriment of battery life. The absence of the spot cleaning feature is also noted on this model, as is the remote control and its handheld timer programming replaced with Wi-Fi connectivity and an app that pairs with your smart phone for programming and locating a stuck machine.

IMHO the decision to make this an even "dumber" machine in order to save the manufacturers a few dollars in parts makes no sense as this is no longer a quiet affair when cleaning up, instead making a rukus and often knocking things around requiring you to adjust your decor after every cleaning.

I hope for their sake they go back to the optical bump prevention system, because I am going to return this model for a refund and try to find another robotic vacuum cleaner with this feature or better, one with that and a memory system to, and recommend that you do not purchase this particular model.

We got tired of lugging a vacuum cleaner upstairs and downstairs so figured we''d get a second one. Then we had the bright idea that we''ll just get a Robot Vacuum and let it clean for us. Enter the Shark ION Robot Vacuum RV871. SETUP: Not much set up required to get it up and running. The initial charge does take a while which dampens some of the enthusiasm. But during that time, I decided to set up the app, give my vacuum a nifty name, and link it to Google. First real disappointment... it does not connect to Google Home. Instead it connects to Google Assistant. What that means is that when you want to use Voice to get the vacuum to clean, you have to tell Google you want to talk to the Shark App, wait for that connection and the Shark Assistant to respond, and then tell the assistant to start the vacuum or to dock it. Needless additional steps, in my opinion. Once it was fully charge, I set it on clean and sat back to watch. CLEANING: I like that it has two sweeping brushes to bring dust and debris to the vacuum itself. It did a fairly good job of vacuuming in all areas and even areas under the bed which are notorious for gathering dust. It even managed to transition smoothly between carpets, hardwood, and tiles. So, if you''re looking for a robot cleaner that can clean well, this can do the job. But... Second disappointment... it is very inefficient. It basically seems to head in a straight direction until it hits an obstacle and then turn around and go off in another direction. And yes, I do mean hit. It bumps into everything! There''s no smart sensor telling it to stop just shy of the obstacle so that it can still sweep right next to the obstacle without actually hitting it. So, it only took one run around my house for the robot to come back with a few scuff marks from hitting stair railings and other hard objects. It''s supposed to have proximity sensors but the only time they seemed to do anything was when it was at a ledge or the top of some stairs. Also, because it has such a random pattern for cleaning, it takes forever to clean any one area and I don''t think it even realises when it''s actually done. I watched it clean one small room for over 35 minutes and it would have kept going if I didn''t stop it. With a regular vacuum, I could have been in and out of that room in 5 mins tops! So, it can clean well but it will take a tremendously long time to do it. I did originally envision setting it on a schedule to clean the lower floor overnight while we slept but, given how inefficient it is, I doubt it''ll be done by the morning since it''ll take forever to clean one area and then head back for its lengthy charge. So, if you''re looking for a good robot cleaner that can clean well and save you time, this isn''t it. Third disappointment... while the robot was running, the app does not sync properly with it. So, even though it was out and about, it thought it was still docked and charging. So, using voice or the app, I could not tell it to return to the dock. I had to go find it and hit the Dock button... might as well carry it back at that point. Similarly, when it did register that the vacuum was out cleaning, I could return it to its dock but the app will still think it''s roaming around. MAINTENANCE: It has a fairly strict maintenance schedule. Seems to require a lot of cleaning every use or weekly. And things like the filter cannot be cleaned with water and reused. Just tap the dust loose after each use and replace it periodically. Does seem like any time the robot saves me from vacuuming, I''ll end up spending on cleaning it. FINAL VERDICT: If you''re using this robot to clean a small space, it can do good work. It''s not very smart but it can get the job done eventually. In my case, I returned this one and have upgraded to the Shark RV2001WD which has better proximity sensors, and most importantly, maps the room. That way, it cleans the room in rows and knows where it left off so it can resume cleaning. **If this review was helpful, please take a second and press the button below to let Amazon know. We got tired of lugging a vacuum cleaner upstairs and downstairs so figured we''d get a second one. Then we had the bright idea that we''ll just get a Robot Vacuum and let it clean for us. Enter the Shark ION Robot Vacuum RV871.

SETUP:
Not much set up required to get it up and running.

CLEANING:
I like that it has two sweeping brushes to bring dust and debris to the vacuum itself.

MAINTENANCE:
It has a fairly strict maintenance schedule. Seems to require a lot of cleaning every use or weekly. And things like the filter cannot be cleaned with water and reused. Just tap the dust loose after each use and replace it periodically. Does seem like any time the robot saves me from vacuuming, I''ll end up spending on cleaning it.
